Over the weekend I participated in the Fall Pub Crawl. For those who are not familiar with this
event, it’s basically an all-day drinking party. So I woke up and had a nice big
breakfast. After I let my breakfast
settle down, I started to pick out my outfit. Its Pub Crawl, nobody dresses
up. Usually your group buys a certain
color t-shirt to wear; however, being in the middle of October in Wisconsin the
weather was not favorable. Once I was
finished putting on my jeans, sweatshirt, and jacket I walked over to my friend’s
house in which they had this huge tent up.
The weather was pretty cold and rainy.
Since these are my friends, I would say we all dress kind of similar. Most of the attire was jeans, rain boots, sweatshirts,
hoodies, and hats. Basically, anything
you could find to keep you warm for the day and night. Later in the evening as our group started to
make our way down to the bars we ran into this other group. This group was full of young woman. We couldn’t help but notice what they were
wearing. All five of the young woman had
on short party dresses and heels, with NO JACKETS! I thought to myself, they
must be crazy. This is Wisconsin I
thought! I just couldn’t help but think
about those girls who are dressing like this.
What do they think they are accomplishing by freezing their butts
off? Was I the only person thinking this
because I was a girl dressed in boots and a jacket or were the guys thinking
they looked sexy or simply crazy? Is this an example of women using their
bodies to maybe get free drinks, or maybe to get into a party? I can’t judge them because I don’t know them personally. I just wish they had more respect for their
bodies or at least put on a jacket.
Ladies and gentlemen, what do you think? Ladies- Do you
think those women are right or wrong for wearing such scandalous dresses out in
cold Wisconsin weather? Would you judge them?
Guys- Do you personally think a women is potentially smart, without even
knowing them or stupid by the way they dressed that night?
I would be wearing a jacket, sweater, scarf--I mean it is Wisconsin. I'm a Community Advisor and I see my girls getting ready to go out in the cold cold weather every weekend, and jackets are rarely every present. I don't judge them, it's important for a girl feel confident. And a lot of these girls feel confident by looking hot. And their definition of hot will by the end of the night have them very cold, and wanting a jacket.
ReplyDeleteI am the same way as the comment above me. I dress for the weather because I will be uncomfortable the whole night otherwise. I usually go out in jeans and nice shirt and, if it is cold, a jacket.
ReplyDeleteI try not to judge women by how they are dressing but sometimes I do struggle. For me, it is not always because they are dressed sexily but because they are going not acting smartly and dressing accordingly for the weather. I shake my head at what women do for "fashion" and dressing up. I wonder why the women feel the need to wear these types of dresses when it is clearly uncomfortable.
I guess if they want to, have at it. I will just stick to the basics.
Alright kids, I'll give you the male run-down. It is surprising how common it is for women [and men] in general to not wear warm clothing when they go out. However, I understand the mentality. Depending upon the occasion and where I'm going, I've been known to wear only a T-shirt and jeans to the bar in mid-January when it's 15 degrees out. Jackets are just a hassle - you have to find someplace to put them, you don't want them to get stolen, you want to look good, etc. I usually only go out in downtown Appleton so all the bars are lined up really close to each other, which means you're outside for 30 seconds - 1 minute tops. From my perspective, I would never judge someone for not dressing warm - it is yet another acceptable culture that has been socially constructed through time.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to see this group of five women wearing skimpy dresses in October in WISCONSIN by all means, they are nuts. Wisconsin is very unpredictable when it comes to weather. I know, when I was a freshman in college, a few girls on my floor would dress up in short little dresses, get their hair all done and cake on makeup to look "older" so they could get into the bars. Looking the way they did, I am sure that there were a few gentlemen at the bars who offered to buy them alcoholic beverages. Pub crawls typically last all day so I would understand dressing somewhat comfortable for a long day of drinking and walking. I agree with the above post that, okay if the bars are right next to each other like in Appleton then fine wear your short dresses because you won't be outside walking for long. But come on ladies, it is Wisconsin. You know the weather and you know for the most part it will be chilly. Dress appropriately.
